What is it?

Chiropody: the foundation of clinical foot care.

Chiropody is the essential podiatric treatment: a comprehensive clinical session where I assess and treat whatever your feet need at that moment. Thickened or poorly cut nails, calluses in pressure points, hard skin that hurts when walking, helomas (corns), cracked heels, professional moisturising. All in a single visit, using sterilised instruments, without water or cosmetics.

It is important to understand that chiropody is not a pedicure. A pedicure is cosmetic and is carried out in beauty salons. Chiropody is a regulated healthcare procedure, performed by a registered podiatrist (No. 838 463 821 COPCV), where the aim is not visual but functional: that the foot does not hurt and that the nails are healthy.

In my practice, I see people who have avoided this care for years due to a lack of knowledge or because of pain. After a first, properly performed chiropody session, most return every 6–8 weeks with a feeling they describe as ‘walking again’.

When is it necessary?

Signs that you need a chiropody appointment.

There’s no need to wait until you have a major problem. If you recognise any of these situations, it’s time to book an appointment:

  • Pain when walking due to corns, calluses or helomas
  • Thickened, yellowed nails or nails that are difficult to cut at home
  • Calluses (corns) between the toes or on the sole
  • Dryness or cracks on the heel that don’t improve with creams
  • Difficulty reaching your feet due to age, weight or pregnancy
  • Diagnosed diabetes — regular maintenance helps prevent complications
  • Older people living alone who need a check-up
  • Athletes with strain on weight-bearing areas

If you’re unsure whether your case is for a podiatrist or another professional, message me on WhatsApp with a photo and I’ll advise you with no obligation.

The session

What a chiropody session with me is like.

The first visit lasts No fixed duration — we take the time your case needs. Follow-up appointments last · cita previa. The process is always the same, but tailored to the needs of each foot:

  1. Brief medical history: Medical history, current treatments, usual footwear, current pain. If you are diabetic or taking anticoagulants, I will take this into account before starting.
  2. ExaminationI check the skin (calluses, cracks, fungal infections), the nails (thickening, ingrown nails, colour changes), pressure points and your gait.
  3. Nail treatmentStraight cut with clinical nippers, filing of thickened nails with a turbine, smoothing to avoid sharp edges. No damage to the skin or nail matrix.
  4. Removal of calluses and corns: Using a scalpel, I remove the accumulated layers of hyperkeratotic skin. I take the necessary steps to relieve pressure without weakening the healthy skin underneath.
  5. Removal of cornsCorns are excised using a scalpel or gouge under direct visual control. One session is usually sufficient unless the underlying cause (footwear or deformity) remains.
  6. Professional moisturising I apply a cream containing 10–20% urea or salicylic acid, depending on the case. I mark the area and advise you on how to continue the treatment at home.
  7. RecommendationsFootwear, frequency of check-ups, exercises if there is overuse. I leave the room with you with a plan, not with a “come back when it hurts”.
Daily care

To make the chiropody last longer.

A properly performed chiropody treatment lasts 6 to 8 weeks for most patients. To prolong the results and reduce the frequency of your visits:

  • Moisturise daily with a cream rich in urea (10–15%) — not just any body cream
  • Wash and dry thoroughly between your toes; moisture there is the main cause of fungal infections and maceration
  • Cut your nails straight across, without rounding the corners — this prevents ingrown toenails
  • Change your shoes if they cause calluses in the same area; a callus is a sign that something isn’t right
  • Check your feet every night if you have diabetes or difficulty feeling pain; any wound that does not heal within 48–72 hours warrants immediate medical attention
Frequently asked questions

The most frequently asked questions.

How long does a chiropody session last?

No fixed duration — we take the time your case needs on the first visit (including medical history and a full examination). Follow-up appointments usually last · cita previa.

Is it the same as a pedicure?

No. A pedicure is carried out in beauty salons and is a cosmetic procedure. Chiropody is a medical procedure performed by a registered chiropodist, without water, using sterilised instruments and based on clinical judgement. It’s what you need if your nails or skin are causing you pain, not if you simply want to have your nails painted.

Does the treatment hurt?

No. A properly performed chiropody treatment is painless, even on very sensitive skin. If you have a particularly painful area, I’ll let you know before touching it and we’ll work carefully.

How often should I come?

Most patients return every 6–8 weeks. For diabetics, pregnant women or people who have difficulty reaching their feet, I schedule appointments every 4 weeks. The frequency is tailored to your feet, not the other way round.

Can I come if I’m diabetic?

Yes, and it is highly recommended. Diabetic feet are one of the areas that benefit most from regular check-ups. I carry out a basic vascular and neurological examination at every visit and will let you know if I detect any changes.

Is it covered by insurance?

We see patients at the Almenara Medical Centre, which is covered by private health insurers. Ask your insurer whether chiropody is included in your policy, or contact us directly and we’ll confirm it for you.

When was the last time you looked after your feet?

One session and you’ll walk differently.
